Rogue's Gallery at the Docklands

You gotta hand it to the Dublin Docklands Development Authority – they sure do come up with some interesting events. Having successful hosted Spencer Tunick’s massive naked art installation, this Friday Analog 2008 takes place featuring Hal Willner’s ‘Rogue’s Gallery’.

Rogue’s Gallery is Wilner’s eclectic collection of modern interpretations of pirate ballads, sea songs & chanteys. For the Dublin gig, the main attraction is Lou Reed. He’ll be joined by a interesting mix of artists and performers including the actor Tim Robbins and three former Virgin Prunes, David Id Busaras, Guggi and Gavin Friday performing as The Three Pruned Men. Other acts include singer songwriters Teddy Thompson and Ed Harcourt as well as Baby Gramps, Julie Fowlis and Rachel Unthank.

The Rogue’s Gallery CD features performances by Irish artists such as Bono, Gavin Friday and Andrea Corr as well as a host of international performers including Lou Reed, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lucinda Williams, Loudon Wainwright III and Rufus Wainwright. For more info on the CD see:

Ticket to Ride?

At times it’s not what you know, it’s whom you know.
Ah, connections. Sometimes they work in your favour, at other times they let you down; or me down, anyway.

I wanted a ticket for Tom Waits. I’m fond of Mr Waits. But so many other people. Unfortunately I couldn’t beg, borrow, scam, charm or persuade any of my usual contacts into giving me one. So that only left one thing for it… I’d have to… gulp… buy a ticket!

Tom Waits’ Irish tickets cost a minimum of €116 here, but just €40 in Prague. Throw in a budget airline ticket and you’ve got yourself a weekend away for not much more. Leonard Cohen tickets were around the €88 mark for Dublin, and just €35 if you fancied a trip to Lisbon. And here’s one I really don’t understand – Eric Clapton felt it necessary to charge Dubliners just under €77 per ticket, but could manage to play Reykjavik for €70. Great city, Reykjavik, but it’s one of the few places significantly more expensive than Dublin – which considering it’s far, far from everywhere, seems fair enough. So why are Clapton’s tickets more expensive in Ireland? Because everybody knows that when it comes to live music we’re a bunch of suckers.

It’s not that I object to handing over my hard earned dosh for concert tickets – I just wish it wasn’t so much of it. And to be honest, knowing that poor Irish fans are being treated like a Banklink really annoys me. Where’s the love, man?

In the end I decided I just wasn’t €116 fond of Tom Waits. Dublin, whatever it’s faults, has plenty to offer by way of entertainment. Instead of spending crazy money on the already rich and famous, I’m going to be supporting smaller artists.

Here’s a suggestion: The Notwist play the Button Factory on 7 June. Their latest album, The Devil, You + Me, has just been released to rave reviews and if it’s anywhere near as good as Neon Golden, then this is bound to be a great night.

Check them out here.

One with the Freaks

Best of all, tickets are just €17.50, which leave you plenty of money over for the important things in life. Like CDs. And shoes…

Get up and Boogie! Ham Sandwich at the Village

There’s one thing – or one of many things – I’ll never understand. Why go to a gig, only to stand around looking glum?

Last Saturday, God’s Gift to Women™ and I headed off to the Village to watch the brilliant Ham Sandwich. Me, I’m fond of Ham Sandwich. They are one of the most exciting new-ish Irish acts. But… wow, they sure do attract a sad looking crowd – indie kids of the chin stroking, shoe gazing mould.

What gives? Now this would all be very well if Ham Sandwich were an emo or goth band which required eyeliner and attitude, but they’re not. Fair enough, they may not be, say, Republic of Loose, but for a band with ethereal female vocals and 4AD guitars, they rock – or bop melodiously at least.

There we were near the front, God’s Gift to Women™ and I – him dancing his little socks off; I was in heels. But the stationary crowd around us was wrecking our buzz. I don’t understand – if you are a fan of a band, show them some love! At the very least, sway in time to the tunes. C’mon kids. Ireland has a reputation for having the best crowds – don’t let the side down!

Vocalist Niamh Farrell tried to exhort the crowd to dance, but it was no use. The old “Are you ready to raaawk? Dublin!” wouldn’t have been appropriate here and her polite requests that the fans at least try to enjoy themselves was met with indifference. As the gig went on, the crowd loosened up but sadly the song the got the most reaction was a cover of Madonna’s Material Girl – complete with Niamh in a blonde wig.

Complaints aside and despite my disappointment with the crowd, the band were great, delivering a blistering set. It was a great gig. Live, the music has an immediacy, which hasn’t quite transferred onto their CD, Carry The Meek.

Ham Sandwich are definitely a band well worth checking out as they travel the country this summer. Just don’t stare at the stage, looking mournful. Get up and dance, damn it!

Check out Ham Sandwich on Myspace for details for the tour schedule.

David Jordan Plays the Hive Live, Dublin! May 27th.

If, like me, you're in need of a little cheering up after last night's Champion's League final, here's just the thing. I'm uber excited about next Tuesday night (May 27th) when David Jordan comes into town to play 3 Mobile's The Hive Live VIP Event in Whelans!

Reasons to be cheerful: 1. David Jordan is fabulous, like, for real chicas / 2. It's in Whelans, so I won't feel out of place or under fake-tanned / 3. It's free and you can win tickets through Facebook or today's Star newspaper / 4. It's midweeks drinks!!

The commutDavid_jordaners amongst us will also have seen what a looker David is, as he's only gone and gotten himself a full page in today's Metro!Super stylish, love it. And new single 'Move On' from his debut long player "Set The Mood" is a total winner- just like his last smash single 'Sun Goes Down' (still can't help shakin the booty when that track comes on, for shame!)

With the plethora of new acts and 'breaking' artists out there, I'm finding myself growing tired of acoustic songsters singing about lost love. David Jordan couldn't be more different- he's soulful, he can totally rock- he's like a young Prince or what Terence Trent D-Arby promised to be (but unfortunately wasn't!). He can also dance- like real dancing, not like what Ronaldo did on the spot before he missed his penalty last night.

Get facebooking people, or email competitions@thestar.ie. Keep checking www.umusic.ie for David news, pics, videos and tour dates.

The Minutes Play BT2 Grafton St. Window!

Minutes_bt2_2 Just a short post this time- for those of you strolling down Grafton St. at around 6.45pm yesterday evening, the sounds you heard coming from the window were indeed that of The Minutes performing their new single 'Harmonic'! The lads took part of the BT2/Phantom 105.2 outside broadcast to mark the start of summer.

Lucky atendees also nabbed €25 vouchers for the store. Good music, free stuff- what more could you ask for? The Minutes play Crawdaddy Wed May 7th to launch the single- which goes on sale May 9th - so get downloading then! Let's inject the charts with some more Irish quality choons!

The Death of a Disco Dancer

Saturday night at the Pod. It was one of those nights where it all magically comes together. The wardrobe doesn’t malfunction, the hair stays in place, the lipstick doesn’t melt.

I couldn’t have been feeling better. It was like the great film director in the sky was feeling benevolent and had covered me in fairy dust. The music was good; everyone was dancing. I had my coterie of admiring males – well, two friends, but a little exaggeration never hurt anyone. Best of all, the bar staff noticed me immediately and handed over the alcoholic beverages at lightning speed. Woo hoo.

Now I appreciate a pair of heels as much as the next girl, but I’m beginning to think they should be outlawed under certain circumstances. Heels, booze and music are a lethal combination – at least on other people. A practiced party girl, such as myself, and no doubt many of you, knows how to dance in her heels without impairing the enjoyment and delicate flesh of other revellers. Alas, not everyone is so wise or stable.

The first time wasn’t so bad. A tiny girl no heavier than a house cat connected with the toe of my shoe. The second time I could overlook as well. As soon as she felt her heel make contact with what was not the dance-floor, my accidental attacker jerked her foot away, minimising the pain. But it was a case of third time unlucky when a young lady with a vodka or two more than is advisable ground her stiletto straight into my toes. I yelped, but although a shriek emanated from the depths of my soul, I was no competition for the DJ so she did it again, thirty seconds later before I had a chance to hobble away.

Hell, I wasn’t going to let a little grievous bodily harm ruin my evening but my foot is paying for it today. Professional party girl or not, unfortunately a banjaxed foot doesn’t qualify as a workplace injury. Damn. A little retail therapy would sure cheer me up. Still I’ll have my revenge. If I catch the clumsy girl again I’m gonna make her an offer she can’t refuse – death or ballet flats! Oh no!

DUBLIN: CANDYCOLLECTIVE, SHOCK & POD PRESENT MOUSE ON MARS.

Following 2007's excursion with Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed, Mouse on Mars return to their roots in their first Dublin show in over four years, and Candy and Shock’s first collaboration since the Shock’d event many moons ago. Mouse On Mars create densely layered tracks with the intended results being grounded in electronic experimentation and an almost pop like sensibility. Designed to yield more with repeated listens, songs are minutely detailed. A series of 10 albums and numerous remixes has come off as primarily intent on dashing expectations, from the ambient-idm ectoplasms like Vulvaland and the more structured Iaora Tahiti; to the flighty and funny electronics, spluttering horns and acoustic-guitar samples the more organic Niun Niggung; to the forest of sonic porcupine quills that is Idiology. Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner have been more than busy in the intervening years between albums. As well as the release of their live record, Live04, on their own label Sonig, and a constant barrage of touring, Toma and Werner collaborated Mark E. Smith of The Fall as Von Südenfed. The trio gained worldwide success with their debut album Tromatic Reflexxions. The M.O.M members produce independently for the Sonig label. St. Werner acted as the artistic director of the Amsterdam Institute for Electronic Music, STEIM and has also worked on two solo records under the Lithops moniker. Support from Shock & Candy DJs Button Factory, Friday 25 April 2008. 11pm ADVANCE TICKETS: http://tinyurl.com/5dkn7s Click here to view our Facebook Event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=12283984918

Unlucky for some but not for you all work has started on the new, 13th, issue of Candy so we’re looking at a release date of June for that. We’ve also confirmed a gallery show (or two) in Dublin’s Monster Truck Gallery which is due to drop late June and we’re in the very last stages of prepping our largest collaborative show so far which we hope to produce in time for an opening in July in Dublin city centre. There’s also some very special secrets in the offing but best to wait until they start to bear fruit before we get blabbing... Right, off I pop to light some more fires... Tick Tock Tick Tock...Counting Down The Minutes

Anyone who was in the VIP area of last week's Bright New Sounds Final in Tripod will attest to what a smashing night it was. Some would claim it was all to do with the unlimited free bar (that's what happens when Vodafone's credit card is behind it), but really it was the 5 bands playing who made it a truly memorable night. I won't lie to you; some were very clearly better than others. And some were standout. But overall it was one of the smoothest running, most enjoyable nights of this type I've ever gone to. And in fairness, for the corporate giants that they are (Pot.Kettle.Black), kudos must go to Vodafone for not shoving their brand down your neck entirely. I did like the fact that everyone wore their lanyards though- as if it were a backstage pass- those of you who did, pat on the back- you were a walking ad for three hours!

And the winners, in case you haven't heard, were Dublin trio The Minutes. Great hooks, surprisingly versatile vocals, the right balance of riff and melody- and tight as f**k! Just what you want from a rock n roll band. The guys went into the studio over the weekend to record their single (Can't tell you what track just yet I'm afraid), which is due out on May 9th. As some blogs have correctly noted the lads are still slogging away at their 9-5s so more power to them for giving this their all.

Minutes_3With the wealth of talent in this city, and the increasingly limited signings taking place, it's great to see a band like this, who've been around for years get a break- and jump in head first.

Check out their myspace if you fancy hearing some choons www.myspace.com/theminutesireland or log onto www.umusic.ie to keep up to date with how things are going for the lads.

Roll on May 7th when the band headline Crawdaddy to launch their new single.
